July 4th 1776, nearly 250 years ago now, our Forefathers came together and signed this Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. Signed by famous names such as John Hancock, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and of course the author of the document Thomas Jefferson. With this one document our forefathers set forth the most fundamental values on which our nation was born. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. No longer do we have to work and toil under the reigns of a King ruling from a far off land. Now we have been given the opportunity, as individuals to seek our own independent way of life. To choose our own path to securing our Life, Liberty and Happiness. But the founding fathers knew that independence from a foreign and unrepresentative rule did not mean that we could no longer depend on anyone. No, instead as independent individuals we are called to support one another so that we may all have the opportunity to achieve those elusive goals of Life, Liberty and Happiness.
“And for the support of this Declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”
This, the closing line of the declaration, emphasizes the importance of not just our families, but our communities as well. So as we all get ready to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of our great nation let us not forget to take the time and really appreciate those around us. Use this opportunity to spend more time building and fostering strong communal bonds just like our forefathers did by bringing together 13 very different colonies for one greater cause. Aas we all gather together with friends and family to eat burgers, drink beer, and watch fireworks let us look to the Flag and remember that it is that Flag that bonds us all together as one people.
