3ft x 5ft Union Civil War-34 Star Flag
Flags International is proud to offer this high quality 3ft x 5ft Union Civil War-34 Star Flag. The flag grew to thirty-four stars on July 4, 1861, when Kansas received recognition in the Stars and Stripes. But now the rising feeling of sectional hatred produced sentiment for removing one star for each state that had seceded. The oddest proposal came from Samuel F.B. Morse, the noted inventor of the telegraph and then president of The American Society for the Promotion of National Union. Morse suggested that the Stars and Stripes be divided into two flags-the canton cut diagonally from top to bottom with twenty- three stars and the upper six and a half stripes retained by the North; the eleven stars below the diagonal and the lower six and a half stripes to go to the South. All such proposals received a firm “No” from the President. Lincoln wanted no tinkering with the Stars and Stripes. This was not a war between two nations but an insurrection of eleven states against the lawful federal government. According to his view the seceding states still belonged in the Union and as a result the national flag should-and would-remain unchanged. Historical U.S. Flags sold by Flags International are Made in the USA. This 3′ x 5′ Union Civil War flag can be flown on a wall-mounted flagpole set or on an in-ground flagpole.
