4in x 6in Serapis Flag with Staff and Spear
This 4″x6″ flag of the Serapis is beautifully printed on silk-like material; these flags offer the highest quality in a mounted flag. They are carefully stitched on all four sides for longer lasting beauty. Flags come on a 3/16″x10″ black plastic staff with gold spear tip finial.
In a letter to the King of Naples in 1778, Benjamin Franklin, Commissioner to France, described our nation’s new flag as “having thirteen stripes, alternating red, white and blue.” In August of the following year, John Paul Jones sailed the Bon-Home Richard to its fateful meeting with the Serapis. Although he won this most famous of the Revolutionary sea battles, Jones was forced to abandon his sinking Richard and transfer to the captured Serapis. The Serapis flew this flag as, battered and triumphant, she sailed into the friendly Dutch port of Texel.
