In 1967, the United States Congress codified the manufacture and use of the banner. To legally manufacture the banner or flag, a company must receive a license through the Department of Defense. Flags International is honored to hold a license to produce these banners. Appliqued Gold Star Banners are hand-made with honor by Flags International.
The banner has a white background, with a red border and a blue star in the center of the white background for each active duty family member in the Armed Forces. This is the only officially authorized flag or banner commemorating the death of a member of the Armed Forces. A “gold” star is affixed over the blue star to indicate the death of an active duty Service Member.
